A few months back Team Body Glove boarded a plane and flew to Japan for the Body Glove Positive Energy Tour fueled by XS Energy Drink. Jamie O'Brien, Cheyne Magnusson, Alex Gray and Anthony Walsh went out and explored the Amami Island, Chiba and Tokyo. Traveling around Japan in search of surf, sumo wrestling and go cart racing. The is a piece written up about the trip in Surfin' Life Magazine as well as a DVD.

Bob and Patty joined Jim Miller and the other JMMF volunteers yesterday for the JMMF Ocean Therapy with the Wounded Warrior Battalion. The Marines were thrilled to meet the living legend. Bob regaled the group with great stories of inspiration, and of course diving and surfing. By coincidence, the topic for our discussion group--what the Marines affectionately call the Kumbaya sessions--was overcoming injuries and what inspires recovery. Bob's story of breaking his neck and back at the first high school football game, and then recovering for such a long and successful life, was perfectly awesome.

This past week was a whirlwind of activity for me, and next week will be more of the same. But, I’ve always figured that moving forward is better than standing still, except when staring at a sunrise or sunset, when just watching is demanded.

Anyway, I had the benefit of a quick trip to Redondo Beach, California to visit with Body Glove International, a major company in the surfing and diving industries. As part of that visit, I had the great pleasure to join company co-founder Bob Meistrell and several family members and others on a dive trip. We took the 72’ Body Glove dive boat The Disappearance out of King Harbor and lazily cruised south to a favorite dive spot off Palos Verdes Point.

On board were Bob and wife Pattie, Bob’s nephew Billy (vice president), Jim Miller (advisor), Billy’s daughter Jenna (communications director) and son Daley, plus six other friends. Planning to dive were Billy, Jenna, Daley and friends Stefan and Tony.

Divers ready to go under

We anchored in 60 feet of ocean and soon all divers were off the swim platform and under the surface. While the divers moved silently off in search of lobsters and other adventures, I took turns discussing business with Bob and Jim, reviewing a new project I had brought them.

Later, while out on the back deck watching the ocean and diving birds, always a possible sign for the presence of whales, I saw a spout that could only have come from a whale, not a dolphin. I focused on the area and was rewarded by another spout and the flash of black, shiny skin. I had a whale!

It was over a half mile away and heading farther north from us, so I began to “wish” it to turn around and head our way. Not five minutes later I saw a spout closer to us and soon realized that, indeed, the whale had come about and was slowly making its way south toward our location. I love it when whales know I’m around and have to come say hello!

Although my iPhone camera lacks distance capability, it was the only camera I had, so I snapped a few shots of the whale as it surfaced about 50 yards away. Although it doesn’t show well in my pictures, there was a fairly deep cut on the peduncle, the top of the whale near the tail, which looked like a keel strike. The cut had healed, but it was evident a boat had crossed paths with the whale at some time in the past.

All of us on deck watched as the young gray whale swam slowly south, just off the kelp line along the coast. In a few minutes it had vanished in the distance, but remained the topic of our amused conversation. When the divers surfaced a few minutes later, they had not seen the whale from below, but caught a parting glimpse as it moved into an area of bright sunlight on the surface.

What a great day! The ocean swells, sunshine, new friends having a good time, and a whale swimming by to say welcome to the west coast. Once again, I was in my element and loving every minute of it. Even the return to King Harbor, with the painted mural of gray whales off in the distance, was a special experience as we passed the Portofino Hotel and glided past boats of every description.

It doesn’t get much better

Emily Jackson, one of our newest members of the team, is a 21 year old 2X World Champion Kayaker. She is also a 7X Teva Mountain Game Winner. Her father was the perfect teacher, being a 4X World Champion and an Olympic paddler himself. She recently went on a trip down to Veracruz, Mexico and gave us an update and some pictures.

"Veracruz, Mexico : A Paddlers All- Around Destination andOne of my New Personal Favorite Locations

My husband leaves me for Veracruz, Mexico about 4 times ayear. I have been a couple times but only to play the kayaker’s wife who hasfood and beer for him at the take out and a back massage because he landed tooflat off a big waterfall. Not this time. This I went down to hold my own andalthough I didn’t run a 70 footer, or launch off the biggest rapids in thebiggest rivers. I did get my own adrenaline thrill and enjoyed doing so!

Because we werehelping to promote all levels of boating in the Veracruz region I got to paddlemany jaw dropping class 2, 3, 4 rivers. These rivers were not only amazingbecause of the fun whitewater they had to offer but because the scenery wasindescribable.

I ran three class 5 runs,the Upper Jalacingo, the ORO, and the Road Side Section of the Alseseca andeach had me slightly nervous but excited at the same time. I am that person that screams the whole waydown and then cries afterwards when I get forced onto Disney’s Tower of Terror.I am also the girl that throws up looking at intimidating horizon lines. I alsodon’t get too worked up until right after I run something. It’s pretty funnyactually, the timing in most videos where you see a kayaker fist pump afternailing a line, you see me hugging my boat and trying not to let everyonearound me know I am sniffling back tears.

Normally muttering something like whydid I just do that that was scary. But it’s the little stuff in between thatreminds of cool it is to be in such a unique canyon in another country, with myfamily and friends and doing what Eleanor Roosevelt said to be necessary inevery day. “Do one thing a day that scares you.” One thing that tends to keep me off the class5 creeks is that thinking of that one rapid that I absolutely don’t want to do.The one rapid defines the whole run because it’s all I can think about, even ifthat rapid is easier than the one I just did.

But I was very excited as thistrip was one of the first times I managed to take each ripple at a time and Irealized how much of it I truly enjoyed the river and felt I was in my comfortzone. I also realized that as much as Ican trust the boys to tell me what I would and wouldn’t like for a majority ofthe runs, that sometimes I can surprise them, and myself. After doing somesketchy seal launches and big slides, I looked at the famous log drop on theJalacingo and decided out of all the things I have done in the day that itlooked nowhere near as bad! My line wasn’t epic but I was proud in myself forlooking and deciding based on me and not what people tell me.

I also walkedcertain rapids on the Road Side section but overall was amazed at how much funand accessible all the drops were. If Ididn’t want to run something, the walk was as simple as portaging could be!

The easier runs that I enjoyed paddling and really soaked inthe landscape were the Pescados, Phillabobos and Octopan. We did multiplesections of the Pecados and the Phillabobos and each had their own uniquefeeling. From the rock formations, elephant ear size ferns to the rapids themselvesthe rivers will always be remembered as a fantastic life experience.

If anyone is every wondering where to go to eat fantasticand I mean truly fantastic food, drink good cheap beer, paddle down someinsanely beautiful rivers, and enjoy the adventure that a personally newlocation has to offer, Veracruz, Mexico has it all….."

Team Body Glove finished the trip off on a high note. After having a good showing at the 2012 Da Hui Backdoor shootout: Jamie O'Brien placed 2nd in the individuals and Team Body Glove of Cheyne Magnusson, Anthony Walsh, Alex Gray and Jamie O'Brien place third. Not bad. So to wrap it up we headed down to Lei Lei's for food, drinks and fun.

Bob Meistrell's Submarine Dive

Today I was so lucky to be able to go and watch my Great Uncle, Bob Meistrell go on a practice dive in his submarine to get ready for his deep dive this Saturday. Uncle Bob owns the submarine with Kurt Siverts, son of Don Siverts. My grandfather Bill, Uncle Bob and Don have all been partners in this submarine for over 30 years. Don and Kurt are the designers and creators.

On the boat today we had Jack Laisure, who helped make the submarine and has worked with Kurt for the last 22 years. He made the port holes, hatch and ceiling system and handles communications and tracking while the submarine is underwater. Mike Brider grew up with Kurt and still works and dives with him. He was friends with my grandfather Bill Meistrell and thinks it is fabulous that everyone is still diving together. Larry Ott has been working with Kurt on the submarine for 6 years running the boat the "Mother Goose." He drives the boat and manages the underwater tracking, making sure to maintain signal with the submarine. The youngest crew member, Hanson, Kurt's son, has been working on the last few jobs. He looked like a natural out there. He has been down in the submarine to 111 feet. Jocko, Uncle Bob's Dive Safety Officer is always close by. Jocko said a submarine " is a safe way to explore the ocean floor. You don't get wet and you don't have to worry about Nitrogen. I think that for his age and how active he is that he is continuing to prove himself as a pioneer of the ocean."

Body Glove Team at Backdoor Shootout

The Backdoor Shootout, put on by Da Hui, is not your average contest. 8 teams with 4 surfers compete for the bragging rights of Pipeline and Backdoor. Rather than an elimination format, every one of the Pipe standouts partaking in the competition get to surf four 30-minute heats, and are ranked based on their top five scoring waves of the event.Jamie O'Brien, Alex Gray, Anthony Walsh, and Cheyne Magnusson make up Team Body Glove for 2012, and were met with beautiful weather and some amazing waves. Team Body Glove was in the lead after Day 1 and Jamie O'Brien was in the lead after Day 2. Greg Browning said that it is pretty much as good as it gets and that Day 1 was one of the best days of the year. Stay tuned... we are expecting some waves on Wed and Thurs.

Jeff McKee: I'm looking to put together the best video section of my career this year for Slingshot's "Lipsmack" team video premiering in May. If that goes according to plan, I'd like to celebrate by going to my first ever rave. Take all my friends in an RV out to the middle of nowhere and then dance our asses off. We may have to go to Germany for this, not really sure...Hopefully the field is filled with soap bubbles too. That would blow my mind.

We are waiting for our invite!

Matt Pagan: My new years resolution is to build a piece of furniture, considering my dad is a building contractor and to win a big event this year :)

Noah Collins in the South Bay Surf Series

Everyone involved with the South Bay High School Surf League is talking about Noah Collins. They say the Mira Costa High freshman is better than Costa alum Dayton Silva, currently the number one ranked college surfer in the NSSA. He’s being compared to Palos Verdes High alum Alex Gray, an alternate to this year’s Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational.

At 5-foot-4, 120 pounds, the 15-year-old goofy-footer looks like Hawaiian pro Derek Ho. Collins lives in Manhattan Beach and surfs everyday, no matter what the waves are like. His favorite local spots are 26th Street and Rosecrans where he and fellow Costa team members Cody Stamos, Kyle Brown and Wyatt Boyd work on their progressive styles.Collins rides 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-5 surfboards made by Roberts in Ventura. Today is our final day here at the North Shore and we are going out with a bang. I caught more waves today than any other day of the trip, and in one particular instance got pressured into a wave by Chewy, the surf team manager, which I ripped the face off of but apparently cut off a local who was paddling my way with some serious aggression when it was all said and done. Whoops. I told him it was Chewy's fault not mine and he quickly scattered. ; ) Anyways, here is my final photo dump from the trip. Mahalo from the haole.

Got the chance to surf Rockies with all the team which is by far the shallowest spot I've ever been.

I'm a sucker for sunsets, and the North shore is the spot to be for my type.

This is the scene from yesterday's waterfall shoot where the Beck sisters and Chandler Parr showed off the newest BG bikini's. Then we all got the chance to jump the cliff into the watering hole. It was about 50 ft. High enough to bruise Helina's ass all the the way to the knee's. That's what happens when you land on your back. Luckily she came up with a smile on her face.

The Ratopia Surf Classic is an annual surf contest created to raise awareness and funding for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). From the 1st Annual Ratopia Surf Classic event back in 2005 to present day, the Ratopia Charity Fund has raised over $62,000 in donations to the LLS. Greetings. Today I am writing you from the floor of the master suite closet in Body Glove's Sunset Beach palace. This humble 30 square feet has become my own private paradise on my first ever trip to Hawaii. I've got my computer to my left, my clothes to my right, and a makeshift bed in- between. In a New York City I'd be doing well, so in this Hawaiian Island I'm on cloud 9. In the great words of Jeff Spicoli, "All I need is a cool buzz and some tasty waves." Now I know exactly what that guy was talking about...

Now that is a tasty wave...

The North Shore is actually nothing like I expected. It reminds me of Costa Rica. One grocery store, one gas station, and an overwhelming amount of epic surf. It's the only thing people seem to live for over here, and it's also amazing to me how long they can discuss the topic. I guess there's just so many variables in surfing that the discussion never ends: The wind, the sand, the swell direction, the size of your board, the amount of people out, and also whether or not the Red Bull DJ is pumping the jams off Jamie O'Brien's back porch. This is apparently a new feature on the North Sore, but the concept is genius.

I've learned something about Hawaiian's while I've been here...1 ft. Hawaiin = 2 - 3 ft. mainland, so when they say the swell at Pipe Masters is 12 foot, that actually means 25-30 and completely death defying. I've never seen a barrel that you could drive your car through, so the past week has been pretty unbelievable. Also getting to hang out with my favorite surfers like Alex Gray and Cheyne Magnusson while we sit on JOB's back porch and watch him get a double barrel during the event has all been pretty insane. Alex also owned it at the Surfer Poll awards when he won the best barrel award and followed it up with a kick ass speech, then yesterday Cheyne took us on the car ride of a lifetime (close to 6 hours) as we cruised across the island to check out Waikiki, do airport runs, and blast house music out the windows of the suburban throughout. That guy knows how to keep the vibes rolling strong all day long. We actually longboarded waikiki last night and the swell was about half a foot (Hawaiin scale). I was on a wave at the same time as this 50 something year old mom who told me to "bend your knee's, sweetheart," so apparently i've still got some work to do on my surfing. Guess I better get out there and practice...So Peace out Bloggers, talk to you soon.

The Body Glove crew made their annual trek to the North Shore of Oahu and this year they are getting killer waves. Team Riders Anthony Walsh, Alex Gray, Cheyne Magnusson and Matt Pagan are bunking up with VP of Marketing Scott Daley, videographers Greg Browning and Scott Smith and Team Manager Matt Chernega for probably the best 10 days of their December. Body Glove's native north shore resident and pipe line charger Jamie O'Brien is competing in this years Pipe Masters. Stay tuned for updates!

Jamie O'Brien Wins Both Heats at Pipe Masters

Jamie O'Brien has a deep history with Banzai Pipeline... he grew up and still lives in a house right at the infamous Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore, he is one of the youngest surfers ever to win a Pipe Masters challenge, he took 4th place at Pipe Masters in 2001 after recovering from a knee injury, he took 1st place at the 2003 Hansen's Pipeline Pro and 1st place in the 2004 Pipeline Masters.

Yesterday was an amazing day for Jamie and the Body Glove team could not be more stoked for him. Thos of us who are not in Hawaii watching him from the beach ahd our eyes glued to the TV screen in our office watching him surf both rounds. Jamie showed no mercy to fan-favorite, Dane Reynolds, handing him a 14.77-3.24 loss. Jamie even finished a double barrel with a triple claim for 9.27. In his second heat he had a one wave victory to Brazillian surfer Raoni Monteiro.

While a lot of riders are using the off-season to rest, play video games and drink, Rusty is taking the opposite approach. The guy is in the gym with a personal trainer almost every day, cutting a little weight and riding every chance he gets. Yes, he has taken some time away with his wife on trips to Vegas and Hawaii, but there is no way Rusty is heading into next season out of shape. The last month has been a great opportunity for Jeff to finally chill out and make some plans for the off season in Orlando. He's been busy building rail set ups with the Slingshot team, shooting for Lipsmack, and also producing tech videos for the new Sligshot products including one for his signature board called "The Response" (http://vimeo.com/30803277). Of course there is never a dull moment with this guy. "I also rode naked for the first time in a quest to accomplish all the tasks printed in the Response board graphic, and have been wake surfing a bunch in my new PR1ME team suit," McKee said. "Now I'm sitting here in Hawaii with the Body Glove crew getting ready to head over to Jamie Obrien's house and watch all the BG surfers practice at Pipeline for the Pipe Masters event this weekend."

James Balzer
This man of action has been in his homeland of Canada where the lakes are 45 degrees and his winching spots freezing over at night. That hasn't stopped him, because Balzer is a true waterman, and you can't keep those guys out of their element no matter what. Last week, he needed a break from the cold and made a trip to Body Glove headquarters. "It's always nice in Redondo Beach, so I flew down to hang with the boys and get my winter wave count up." Balzer said. "Everyone was getting ready to head to Hawaii to shoot all the new gear with the surfers. It was a quick, but fun trip." On his way home, he stopped in Northern Cal to ride with Grant Roberts for a few days on the Delta. "We got some shredding in, but it was so windy and all those Delta guys just want to play beer pong." Now he's back in Vancouver getting ready for Christmas. "Big thanks to Body Glove for letting my swing by and for keeping me warm all winter in their sick suits."

Happy Birthday to Bob, who recently turned 20. "Anti-climactic." He said. "The one year countdown begins." Bob's been staying warm in the water with his PR1ME full suit, and commented randomly that he really misses Balzer.

The North Shore Film Festival will take place December 2-4th at the Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of Oahu. Transworld Surf is screening all Imaginarium clips which includes our 8-Bit clip. If you are on the North Shore definitely mark this on your calendar!!!

Many of the films screened at the second annual North Shore Surf Film Festival have been nominated for the prestigious "Surfer Poll Awards" that will be taking place following the Festival on Dec. 6th. The Festival will provide a great insight to what films are out there vying for the coveted awards as well as an excellent film program for all to enjoy at the three day film festival taking place this coming weekend on Dec. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th at the new venue SURFER the bar located at the Turtle Bay Resort.

The Seal Beach Surfing Championships

For the last fourteen years the Seal Beach Lifeguard Association (SBLA) has held the annual surf contest, "The Seal Beach Surfing Championships", to raise money for local charities. This years waiting period for the two-day event begins January 7th, 2012, and runs through February 25th, 2012. The event will be held on one the weekends during this waiting period. The waiting period will allow for the best possible surfing conditions.

2012 Seal Beach Surfing Championships divisions will consist of: Men's Open Shortboard, Men's Open Longboard, Master's Shortboard, Master's Longboard, Seniors Open, Women Open, Juniors, Grom and Menhune.

This year contest directors have added a new "Best Trick Contest" presented by Body Glove.

With each entry, every surfer will receive a contest t-shirt, and a meal at the awards banquet. Sign-up forms are available at local sponsors - Katin Surf Shop, Harbour Surfboards, Z-Pizza, Hennessey's, Bruce Jones Surf Shop (sunset beach, Yucatan Grill, and Lifeguard Headquarters (888 Ocean Ave).

Lau is focused on his opportunity to compete in the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing that begins next week. This is Lau’s second ASP victory this year, having taken out the equally rated 4-star Copa Quiksilver El Salvador event back in July. “This is my first year doing a lot of the WQS events,” said Lau. “I got a lot of opportunities to travel more and I had a good summer. I did this event last year and it was totally different. I was struggling through the whole event. I just wanted to come over this year and improve on last year. I did that and I’m happy with a win. I’ve been looking forward to this my whole life pretty much, watching everyone get out there and get in the Vans Triple Crown, so just to get in it, I feel honored.”

OFF-SEASON AWESOMENESS

Every year we go through the same routine. Anxiously anticipating the season’s end to get back into a routine lifestyle, then dreading the colder days of winter and excited for the next season to begin. We find ourselves at the beginning of our off-season now, figuring out ways to productively pass the time.

I have caught a cable park fever which has accounted for my wake productivity. Along with that, Rusty Malinoski and myself are the ringers on an 0-8 softball team ready to make a legendary playoff run, come November.

Harley Clifford has been shipped back to Australia to keep flipping and spinning with his never ending summer; the kid has an addiction.

As for James Balzer, if you follow him on Instagram (“snappybalz”) you can see Balzer-style documentation of "the kid" growing up. Good work Balzer, you are the king of baby making.

Jeff McKee has been documenting other team happenings on alliancewake.com, including an interview with our new favorite NorCal ripper, Trever Maur. Also keep your eyes peeled for LipSmack, a Slingshot team video starring McKee himself.

Body Glove has long held the relationship with the ocean as sacred. Body Glove is a family owned business with an almost 60 year history in the ocean. It is our belief that protected species such as turtles in any ocean across the globe should not be touched, taken or disturbed.

Jamie O’Brien tried to use his brand of humor in an effort to bring awareness to fibropapilloma, a herpes-type infection, that is afflicting the endangered sea turtle population. We believe that he could have achieved his goal in a much better manner. We treat our athletes like family so like a family we have addressed this situation internally and directly with Jamie.

We do not condone this activity and have taken the proper internal steps to inform Jamie of the seriousness of this activity. We do not believe this specific photo accurately depicts Jamie’s relationship with the ocean and its’ inhabitants and know that it does not reflect Body Glove's relationship with the ocean.

We thank the concerned public for their messages, input and for bringing this photo to light and hope that it can be used as a learning experience for all people who enter the ocean with the amazing creatures in it.

Alex Gray New Videos- Tahiti- Fiji, Mexico and More

Alex Gray has been a very, very busy man lately and his winter has not even started. Between scoring two separate massive swells in Tahiti, he squeezed in all time Cloudbreak in Fiji with Kelly Slater and some ridiculous barrels in Mexico with Dane Reynolds. He also launched a blog called TurkeyMelt, helped Body Glove win the Transworld Imaginarium with Jamie O'Brien and Cheyne Magnusson, taught kids how to surf, judged a dog surfing event, scored heavy Shipstern's Bluff in Tasmania and went to Japan for some Sumo wrestling. We can't wait to see what happens this winter in Hawaii, California and anywhere else where the waves are pumping. Please enjoy the fruits of Alex's labor.

Look out Blogger world and especially all of you in the surf blog world. One of the most creative, funny, engaging, best looking and hard charging surfers in the entire world just launched his blog. Body Glove's main man, Alex Gray, has launched turkeymelt.com. Your guess is as good as ours as to why the blog is called turkey melt but he can call it anything he wants as long as he keeps updating it with his crazy adventures inside and outside of the ocean. Take a look at the first couple posts and you will see what you have in store. We can't wait to see more.

Alex's first couple of posts show some crazy waves from the Teahupo and Shipsterns. Alex charges and if he charges this blog the way he charges heavy surf then the blog world is going to see something amazing this winter. We know we will stay tuned and you should too. Yea Bro!!!!
