Melissa Marquardt Joins Body Glove Wake Team!

Melissa Marquardt has been wakeboarding at a high level for over ten years and is widely regarded as the most stylish women's rider. Residing in Canyon Lake, California, Melissa also travels the world and has become one of the sport's top ambassadors. That's why she's currently in Germany, spreading the universal language of Awesome with a few of her sponsors. Melissa will be rocking Body Glove wetsuits and swimwear and is a great fit within the wake team cast of characters.

Melissa began her current trip in Holland with Nicola Butler, where they rode and filmed with Nik Summers, the European distributor for Liquid Force and GoPro. Next, they headed to Langenfeld and The Bricks, two of the best cable parks in Germany (there are over 80 total cable parks in Germany alone). Then, the pair went back to Holland to support a Monster Energy rail jam. Next, they will go to Nico Von Lerchenfeld's Cash for Tricks contest, then ride further south in Austria and Italy. More updates and videos to come!

Harley Clifford Wins Pro Wakeboard Tour Season Title!

Pro Tour season results: Harley 1st, Phil 2nd, Rusty 3rd

Harley Clifford just won Pro Wakeboard Tour stop #5 in Knoxville, Tennessee last weekend, which gave him the MasterCraft Pro Tour season title and puts him in a great position to win the King Of Wake series as well.
“This year was by far the gnarliest season on tour, Harley said. “I actually won this title in my rookie season, then it has eluded me for the last two years. So I’m definitely pumped to be back on top right now.”
Also follow Harley and Rusty Malinoski on the King Of Wake tour. With two events left (Nationals & Worlds), Harley and Phil Soven are deadlocked in a tie for first place.

Harley 1st, Rusty 2nd In "Boat" At Red Bull Wake Open: Photos & Video

Blue skies and calm waters set the stage to kick off the Red Bull Wake Open on Thursday, starting with the Boat event towed by a Malibu Wakesetter MXZ. Red Bull chose a scenic mining location north of Tampa, Florida with fresh, blue/green water and white sand beaches.

A new format was implemented, which gave riders two passes, and their best five-trick pass would be scored. With plenty of room to land five tricks comfortably, this format encouraged style, individualism and huge airs into the flats. One requirement changed this event in a big way; riders had to include one trick consisting of a 360 or less. We saw lots of stylish straight airs, backside 180’s and boned out 3’s, all way into the flats.

Arriving straight from Australia, just in time for the event, Harley Clifford was adapting well to the new format, starting out his finals run with a massive stalefish backside 360. “Yeah, the format was sick and it was cool to see everyone’s different airs. Rusty [Malinoski] was doing that rad melon to indy backside 180, and just everyone was mixing it up.”

Adam Errington also launched the biggest airs of the day, boosting a nose/indy backside 180, and a crazy heelside 360 rewind. All the riding was captured with the best high-speed action cameras in the world and the footage aired live on NBC as part of the Red Bull Signature Series last Saturday.

The four-man final consisted of Harley, Rusty, Adam and Raphael Derome. Taking third, Raphael was really pumped considering this was a huge score to add to his odds of winning the coveted overall title with Big Air and Park events remaining. Rusty looked really strong all day and had an unfortunate crash on his huge stale roll to blind. That may have been the deal breaker that landed Rusty in second behind Harley Clifford’s five-trick banger pass and double up.

Harley was super pumped on the Boat event and has a great perspective on the remaining events, “This really pumped me up to try and do well in Big Air and Park, which is an environment I don’t normally compete in, but it’s going to be really fun.”

RESULTS
1. Harley Clifford  (AUS)
2. Rusty Malinoski  (CAN)
3. Raphael Derome  (CAN)
4. Adam Errington  (SCT)

A Friendly Reminder From Body Glove

Redondo Beach, CA, May 7, 2012 – For those in North America, it’s that time of year again. You’re tuning up your boat for the season, assembling your crew and checking all your gear. Sometimes, riders will forget one essential element. This piece is not going to help you ride better and doesn’t have anything to do with going big or even looking cool, but it has one primary purpose: to save your life.
Most people will have forgotten or haven’t heard about the pro rider from Discovery Bay, California, who lost his life in Texas on May 6, 2000 – while not wearing a vest of any kind.  His early passing was a huge wake up call to everyone involved in the sport and we noticed a difference. WAKEBOARDING Magazine (now TransWorld WAKEBOARDING) even implemented a vest policy, which was summed up by “no vest, no shot in the mag.”
Since then, wakeboarding has diversified greatly, which is great for the sport. Cable parks, winches and PWC’s are now a great alternative to riding behind the boat. Through this diversification, there is a huge grey area regarding the use of vests.
Even Body Glove’s own Bob Soven struggled with the concept, “For my latest cover with TransWorld WAKEBOARDING, I chose to ride with a shirt over my Vapor pullover,” Soven said. “I guess I was going for a ‘street’ look, but I now realize I was promoting a bad image to the youth and every other rider out there. Fact is, staying safe is number one, having fun is number two (and red hair is optional). I can’t say it enough to encourage you to wear a vest no matter what activity you are enjoying. If you’re feeding birds in a bird pond then you are excused, but anything else, throw on that life vest and consider a USCG approved PFD. I thank Body Glove for showing us what’s most important -- staying alive and keeping those around you safe to enjoy another summer.”

Wake Team Update: November 2011

OFF-SEASON AWESOMENESS

By Bob Soven

Every year we go through the same routine. Anxiously anticipating the season’s end to get back into a routine lifestyle, then dreading the colder days of winter and excited for the next season to begin. We find ourselves at the beginning of our off-season now, figuring out ways to productively pass the time.

I have caught a cable park fever which has accounted for my wake productivity. Along with that, Rusty Malinoski and myself are the ringers on an 0-8 softball team ready to make a legendary playoff run, come November.

Harley Clifford has been shipped back to Australia to keep flipping and spinning with his never ending summer; the kid has an addiction.

As for James Balzer, if you follow him on Instagram (“snappybalz”) you can see Balzer-style documentation of "the kid" growing up. Good work Balzer, you are the king of baby making.

Jeff McKee has been documenting other team happenings on alliancewake.com, including an interview with our new favorite NorCal ripper, Trever Maur. Also keep your eyes peeled for LipSmack, a Slingshot team video starring McKee himself.
